Overview

Editor Rating 3.4  The Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K is a top loading washing machine that is easy on electricity and provides all the standard presets. It is a bit more expensive than other comparable models, however, and we feel the extra price is not justified for this machine.

Full Review

The Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K has been designed to use the latest washing machine technology in a standard top loading machine. Although it does an adequate job, it is fairly expensive for the number of features - especially considering the results are no more than standard when washing clothes.

There are six presets on the Whirlpool WFW8300SW. Although this is slightly less than other machines in its price range, the six presets are more than adequate for the average family. There are also five temperature levels and the water level is adjusted automatically.

The electronic controls on the Whirlpool WFW8300SW are clearly labeled and easy to use. This washing machine comes with standard dispensers for fabric softener and bleach.

The Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K is an energy efficient washing machine with an Energy Star rating. Buying an Energy Star washing machine is always a good idea because the slightly extra cost will be compensated by the savings in your utility bills.

The GVW9959K is fairly quiet during operation and is not as tricky to install as a frontloading machine as it seems to be more tolerant to slightly off-level installation. It has a stainless steel tub and is only available in white. It is a stylish machine and comes with a one year Parts and Labor warranty.

In Use

The Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K is a quiet washing machine that is easy on electricity and water. It does a fairly good job when washing average loads of laundry, but is less than reliable for heavy loads. If there are too many clothes in the tub the results are less than optimal. Perhaps the energy efficiency is the result of a less powerful motor which cannot distribute the detergent evenly through the laundry load. Whatever the reason, the Calypso GVW9959K is not a good choice for a large family or anyone who does heavy loads of laundry. For small families, it does an adequate job.

This was a very expensive mistake. This washer does not clean cloths well, is very loud on spin, will no longer dispense bleach on it's own, and has error codes coming up on the display that stop the washer now. Very poor quality and no longer made for others to make the mistake.
